HI Cosmology in the Local Universe with ALFALFA
نویسنده
چکیده
The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey is an ongoing second generation blind extragalactic HI survey exploiting Arecibo’s superior sensitivity, angular resolution and digital technology to conduct a census of the local HI universe over a cosmologically significant volume. As of mid2007, ∼4500 good quality extragalactic HI line sources have been extracted in ∼15% of the final survey area. ALFALFA is detecting HI masses as low as 10M and as high as 10 M with positional accuracies typically better than 20, allowing immediate identification of the most probable optical counterparts. Only 3% of all extragalactic HI sources and fewer than 1% of detections with MHI > 10 M cannot be identified with a stellar component. First ALFALFA results already suggest, in agreement with previous studies, that there does not appear to be a cosmologically significant population of optically dark but HI rich galaxies. ALFALFA promises a wealthy dataset for the exploration of many issues in near-field cosmology and galaxy evolution studies, setting the stage for their extension to higher redshifts with the Square Kilometer Array (SKA).

ALFALFA: HI Cosmology in the Local Universe
For the last 25 years, the 21 cm line has been used productively to investigate the large–scale structure of the Universe, its peculiar velocity field and the measurement of cosmic parameters. In February 2005 a blind HI survey that will cover 7074 square degrees of the high latitude sky was started at Arecibo, using the 7-beam feed L-band feed array (ALFA). Known as the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALF...

متن کاملThe Velocity Function in the Local Environment from Λcdm and Λwdm Constrained Simulations
Using constrained simulations of the local Universe for generic cold dark matter and for 1 keV warm dark matter, we investigate the difference in the abundance of dark matter halos in the local environment. We find that the mass function within 20 hMpc of the Local Group is ∼ 2 times larger than the universal mass function in the 10 − 10 hM⊙ mass range. Imposing the field of view of the on-goin...
متن کاملThe Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Extragalactic HI Survey
The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey is a program aimed at obtaining a census of HI-bearing objects over a cosmologically significant volume of the local universe. When complete in ∼3–4 years, it will cover 7000 square degrees of high latitude sky using the 305 m telescope and the seven-beam Arecibo L-band feed array (ALFA). As of May 1, 2008, almost 60% of the required observations ar...
متن کاملThe Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey Skeptical Review Report
As a local Universe (z < 0.06) extragalactic spectral line survey, ALFALFA (Arecibo program A2010) aims to cover ∼ 7000 deg of the high galactic latitude sky within the Arecibo telescope declination limits 0 < Dec. < +36. Survey definition, strategy and goals are described in Giovanelli et al. (2005). As a second generation “blind” HI survey, ALFALFA is designed to improve dramatically on the p...
